Here's the latest news in the world of Countrypolitan music:

On Wednesday, December 20, 2000, Eddy Arnold, Maya Angelou and Mikhail Baryshnikov received the National Medal Of Arts from President Bill Clinton at a ceremony in Constitution Hall.

President Clinton spoke the following words when he presented the Medal to Eddy Arnold:

"As a boy growing up on a Tennessee farm, Eddy Arnold learned to plow fields with teams of mules and to play country music on the guitar. Fortunately for us, when it came time to pick a career, he made the same decision that a lot of us young southerners made -- he did not want to work that hard with the mules. He chose the guitar, and country music has never been the same.

In his career, he's made records that broke all records. His Bouquet of Roses stayed on the charts longer than any country song in history, even down to today. And he's had more hits than any other country artist. He brought music into millions of homes across America. I told him this morning when I met him, I could still remember when I was a very young boy listening to him sing on the radio before my family even had a television.

He has earned the title, The Ambassador of Country Music, and we are honored to honor him today, Mr. Eddy Arnold."

On February 6, Mandy Barnett will be participating in a concert/lecture with Dr. Cecilia Tischi of Vanderbilt University, at Lebanon Valley College in Anneville, PA. Per Dr. Tischi, "This concert has a special "Love" theme (after all, it's February, Valentine's Day Month) as I play super-emcee with lots of visuals from movies, ads and arts, all pointing to different kinds of love, from romantic passion to triangles to love of home and family." Mandy is scheduled to sing 2 or 3 songs of each kind of love that Dr. Tischi discusses. This is a full concert in a theatre which is described as "gorgeously restored from its glory days." Mandy will be accompanied by two legendary members of her band, Steve Chapman and Harold Bradley. This is a unique opportunity that you're sure to enjoy if you are fortunate enough to be able to attend. Mandy puts on a great show and this atmosphere would just enhance her musical talents. Be sure to attend if you can.

Anne Murray will be presented with Canada's East Coast Music Association Directors' Special Achievement Award by Governor General Adrienne Clarkson at the ECMA's Awards gala on Sunday February 11, 2001. The gala will be carried live from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island at 8pm EST on CBC Television and in stereo on CBC Radio Two - check local listings and www.ecma.ca.
